Wompoo Fruit-Dove

Ptilinopus magnificus sub. Sp. Keri 38-48 cm
The largest of Australia’s fruit-doves, it flies swiftly and directly but sits quietly and still, well camouflaged with its brilliant colouring. Searching for fruiting trees, high in the canopy, it is best recognised by its call and the sound of falling fruit. It is becoming rare in SE Qld and NSW due to deforestation. Breeding: between July and March in a flimsily built platform of sticks on a thin horizontal fork.
Trees to plant: Blue quandong (Elaeocarpus eumundi), rusty laurel, woolly pine, bollywoods and palms.
