Welcome!
Kuranda Envirocare is a volunteer community organisation based in Kuranda, a part of the bioregion of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area in Far North Queensland, Australia. Kuranda Envirocare is located in Djabugay Country (also known as Tjapukai). We seek to work alongside the Djabugay Traditional Owners and other First Australians to build and strengthen relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Peoples. We value and seek to protect the natural environment of Kuranda and its environs, work to conserve and repair biodiversity in the area, and to educate the community to do likewise.
Kuranda Envirocare has a special commitment to preserving and strengthening the Envirolink Corridor, a 10 kilometre stretch of remnant rainforest south and west of Kuranda. The corridor is vitally important for connectivity as it links a narrow bottleneck of the north and south sections of the World Heritage listed rainforest. The Envirolink Corridor, as well as the Fairyland Corridor, significantly maintains connectivity between separated populations of animals such as the endangered Southern Cassowary. Kuranda Envirocare, through regular working bees and their native plant nursery, has restored the most vulnerable sections of the Envirolink and Fairyland Corridor. Significantly, the Myola Link is a new section funded by a biodiversity grant for a five-year project along the banks of the Barron River is linking both corridors. In tandem with the Myola Link project, two other grants are contributing to critically endangered frog populations in the area.
