Victoria's Riflebird
Ptiloris paradisceus 24-28 cm
Both colourful in their own way, the male is jet black with striking iridescent peacock blue flashes on its tail, crown and breast. The female is mainly brown, buff and cream with attractive markings. Both have a long curved bills and a short tail. Like treecreepers, they forage up and down tree trunks searching for insects, although they eat fruits and are often the bane of fruit-growers. Usually solitary, the male has an elaborate display when attracting a female. |
