Large-tailed Nightjar
Caprimulgus macrurus 25-28 cm
These nocturnal birds live close to the edge of the rainforest and nest on the ground on leaf litter where they are cryptically camouflaged. In flight they are recognised by white patches on their wing bars and outer edges of their fanned tail. However they are mostly detected by their repeated calling at night – “chop-chop-chop-chop” during the August-January breeding season. |
