Black Butcherbird

Cracticus quoyi 38-44 cm
One of the rich songster’s of the rainforest. These relatives of Australian magpies have a fearsome reputation for their carnivorous habits. Inconspicuously, it perches amongst dense forest thickets and quickly swoops to take its prey of small reptiles, rodents, frogs or invertebrates. Youngsters are rufous brown all over, darker above.
