Listen to a two minute video on the significance of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area.
The Wet Tropics has some of the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforests on Earth. They are a living museum of how land plants have evolved since the break up of Gondwana 40 million years ago - from ancient ferns, conifers and cycads to the more highly evolved flowering plants. Kuranda is known as a biodiversity hotspot sitting in the Black Mountain corridor between the North and South Wet Tropics. There have been many new species evolving here as the ice ages pushed forward and then receded, changing the amount of rainforest cover of this area of eastern Australia. These species include Litoria myola (the Kuranda Tree Frog) and the Myola Plum, and many others are featured on this walkway.
