The Brief

Background on Kuranda Tree frog

Kuranda is home to several endangered frog species of the Wet Tropics but we have a special Kuranda district resident, endemic to the Myola Valley and Kuranda township creeks and now listed as critically endangered. We’d like to introduce you to this special critter, found nowhere else in the world; Litoria myola, otherwise known as the Myola or the Kuranda tree frog.  Frogs are our “canary in the mine” (sensitive indicators of a healthy environment). Kuranda's long term frog monitoring project has passed its 5th year. A Kuranda Frog Friendly Neighbourhood scheme with property signage has also been established.

The Kuranda tree frog population seems stable and some creeks have even had a small increase but threats from development large and small, that reduce habitat health and threats from infestations of several invasive ant species are ever present.

The Purpose of the competition

Friends of the Kuranda Tree Frog, in conjunction with Kuranda Envirocare, will host a competition to design t-shirts for the citizen science monitors in recognition of their support of the long term frog monitoring program, also to the participants of the Kuranda’s Frog Friendly Neighbourhood program,  and to those who support our local environment. By involving the community in the design and logo, we’d like to celebrate the community’s contribution to protecting our local threatened species during the current global extinction crisis .

The final result will be a logo and t-shirt made for the citizen science monitors, the Frog Friendly Neighbourhood participants and Friends of the Kuranda Tree frog. T-shirts designed by the community can be worn with pride and will create a distinction for citizen science frog monitors when wearing them in the field or in the community. When the T shirt is worn in public, the wearer as a Friends of the Kuranda Tree Frog  will be recognized for their contribution to protecting our local threatened species.

We hope also that other organisations and businesses who become Friends of the Kuranda Tree Frog will use the logo for promotion of their involvement.

Judging and use of winning entries

Prizes will be given to the best logo and t-shirt design , plus catch phrase or tag line. There are several categories – Adult, Juniors and a people’s choice award for the best logo and t-shirt design. The T-shirt design and logo chosen by the panel of judges will be used as the official t-shirt for Friends of the Kuranda Tree Frog.

The panel of judges may include a Kuranda Envirocare executive committee member, a frog friendly property participant, a long term frog monitor,  a local indigenous ranger, a local tourism member and Dr Conrad Hoskins, who nominated and has done extensive study on this new species.

Rules for the competition will include criteria for entrants to follow for the logo and t-shirt design. Entrants who follow the criteria in designing the logo and t-shirt are most likely to create a suitable design and be eligible to win prizes.

Winners will be announced in September 2019 to coincide with National Threatened Species day.

Once the final winners are chosen, the winning designer agrees that the Kuranda Envirocare executive may need to alter the design to suit the method of reproduction of the logo and / or t-shirt.
